Lewisville ISD Board of Trustees will have a new member.
Madison Lopez defeated incumbent Michelle Alkhatib for at-large place 6. Lopez, 26, is a lawyer and graduate of Lewisville High School. During her campaign, she insisted that the district needed new leadership.
Like other districts across the state, LISD has faced funding issues and budget shortfalls. The board made the decision to close several schools late last year.
Lopez received 16,143, or 54 percent, of the votes that were cast for the seat vacated by Buddy Bonner.
“I’m truly honored to serve this district that shaped me and to represent the belief that young people’s voices matter,” Lopez wrote to her supporters on Facebook.
Alkhatib acknowledged the results this morning.
“Last night’s results are not what I hoped for, and I won’t pretend that this isn’t difficult,” she wrote. “This isn’t an ending – just a shift. And I am still here, with you, for our kids and our community.”
Voter turnout in all of Denton County was nearly 17 percent, according to Denton County Elections Administration. More than 112,000 out of 664,921 registered voters headed to the polls yesterday and during early voting. In last November’s general election, turnout was 68 percent.
