Within a span of a few days, Lewisville ISD and Keller ISD announced closures of their swimming facilities, leaving youth swimmers to find alternate plans for the summer.
Lewisville ISD will close Westside Aquatic Center on May 22 for renovations that were approved in 2024 and Keller ISD has closed its natatorium effective immediately.
The closures had groups like the Lakeside Aquatic Club, one of the largest swim teams in the state with more than 1,300 swimmers, scrambling for another place to practice. The club was originally told the renovations at LISD would take place after the Eastside Aquatic Center was reopen, but the timing changed, which was a “significant issue,” head coach Jason Walter wrote in an email to parents.
“We received 2 weeks' notice prior to the beginning of the summer long course season. There was no prior communication about the closure to the entire facility,” Walter wrote on May 5.
Lewisville ISD did not respond to emailed questions about the closure.
The Westside Aquatic Center in Lewisville will be closed through July 7 for construction that will include re-lining the smaller pool and replacing the video scoreboard, according to the district’s website. Voters approved a $101 million bond package in 2024 that will be used to improve the natatoriums, stadiums and athletic facilities. The facility was built in 2014 and is used for a district-wide water safety program for second graders, as well as swim meets and water polo matches.
In the summer, swim lessons are also offered, but will not take place this year. LISD Special Olympics is also effected by the closure.
The district’s Eastside Aquatic Center in The Colony is closed through May for renovations, according to LISD’s website.
Keller ISD said in an email that its natatorium was closed on May 12 due to a “maintenance issue with the pool.” There is no estimated reopening date.
The district’s school board approved $2.1 million in funding to repair the natatorium at a regularly scheduled meeting Thursday night. The repairs will take most of the summer to complete, according to Keller mayor-elect and current councilman Ross McMullin. The city council will also host a special meeting on May 22 to discuss the future of the facility.
After LISD announced its swim facility’s closure, other school districts like Grapevine-Colleyville, Carroll in Southlake and Dallas allowed Lakeside Aquatic Club to use their facilities in the meantime.
“Even with three pools down, I want to be clear: we are approaching this with focus, calm, and confidence,” Walter wrote. “We have been through difficult situations before, and we will work through this one as well.”
