The Flower Mound Police Department has a motorcycle unit again after a 19-year hiatus.

The department announced Wednesday that motorcycles were returning to the streets to patrol. Flower Mound previously had a motorcycle unit beginning in 1996 but it was phased out in 2007 when the vehicles weren’t usable anymore.

“They're especially effective for traffic enforcement at busy intersections and other high-incident locations where a traditional patrol car isn't always the best fit,” the department wrote on social media. “Their maneuverability allows them to navigate congested traffic and work in areas that can be more challenging to access in a vehicle.”

The department purchased two BMW 1300 RTP motorcycles with an OEM police uplift package for $91,618.82 from Brien Mehler at BMW Motorcycles of North Dallas in November. The motorcycles replaced a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe, according to a bid award recommendation. Each vehicle cost $45,809.41.

The bid was awarded to Retail Motorcycle Ventures, Inc., which does business as BMW Motorcycles of North Dallas.

Flower Mound used a cooperative contract with the city of Fort Worth, which allows the town to bypass the bidding process here and use a pre-vetted bid that another municipality went through. It has similar purchasing agreements with other cities like Southlake.

Retail Motorcycle Ventures, Inc., which is based in Plano, has contracts with neighboring cities and police departments across the state, including Irving, Southlake, and the Texas Department of Public Safety. The latter spent $985,110.94, or $44,777.77 each, on 22 BMW motorcycles in May 2025.

In February, Wichita Falls purchased three BMW 1300 RTP motorcycles for $40,777.77 each. It is not clear what features are different between those and the ones Flower Mound purchased.
