After LISD changes start times, Flower Mound looks for more crossing guards

When Lewisville ISD announced changes to school start times in January, it had unintended consequences.
Middle school students used to be the last to arrive at school under the district’s staggered start times. In August, the school day for kids in grades 6 through 8 will begin at 8:15 a.m. instead of 8:40 a.m. and high school students will be the ones to get to sleep in.
Through last year, some crossing guards who helped elementary students before and after school held a second shift to assist middle schoolers. They were able to do so because the high school’s start time between allowed them to finish one job and go to the next. High schools do not have crossing guards.
“With the adjusted schedules, that is no longer possible at some locations, which has required us to make staffing adjustments,” said Melissa Demmitt, communications director for the town.
Now, those crossing guards have had to make a choice about which students they’ll see each day and the Flower Mound Police department, which runs the crossing guard program, is looking for more people to help students cross.
“That said, we experience normal turnover each year and routinely conduct recruitment efforts during the summer to prepare for the upcoming school year,” Demmitt said.
The department is currently accepting applications for crossing guards. The pay starts at $17.33 an hour and requires two hours per day. There is a $1,000 attendance incentive per school year.
